How a Brooklyn Renewable Energy Company Ended Up Making a Surveillance Drone
Pliant Energy Systems has spent the last two years developing a drone named Velox. The robot, which was initially meant to be a generator that could harness the flow of water, is now more of a sleek-looking surveillance drone with potential to one day even help deliver medical supplies and ammo in combat. We spoke to the founder and CEO of Pliant about the evolution of his company. We also wanted to see the robot in person because it's really cool.

US offshore wind: tapping into an underused resource | FT Energy Source
Wind power is the number one source of renewable energy in the US, but nearly all this stems from onshore wind. The US offshore wind industry is underdeveloped and, with only two small offshore operations to date, it lags far behind Europe and China by comparison. The FT’s Derek Brower looks at why progress is slow, and what the White House is trying to do about it.

In the near future, the energy made in the US is going to be much greener. The country’s current goal is for solar plants alone to make nearly half of US electricity by 2050. But we can’t just build solar plants where coal and gas plants used to be. They have to be built where it's… sunny. And wind turbines have to be built where it’s windy. The problem is, that’s not always where the people who need the power are.
The distance from energy source to energy need is about to get a lot bigger. And the US is going to need more high-voltage transmission lines. A lot more. As soon as possible. While solar plants can be built relatively fast, high-voltage transmission projects can take up to 10 years. So experts say we need to start proactively building them, right now.
This is the second of five videos we're releasing on climate coverage this week. You can watch the first video on extreme heat 🌡 and what cities are doing to combat that here: https://youtu.be/ZQ6fSHr5TJg
And the third video on prescribed burns 🔥 for forests here: https://youtu.be/0o6ezu_h6iE

Much of the map data in the piece comes from the Net-Zero America study out of Princeton University: https://netzeroamerica.princeton.edu/

And here’s more about that denied power plant from local Vermont TV station WCAX: https://www.wcax.com/content/news/Regulators-deny-Derby-solar-project-504867011.html
This other great study is what calculated how much renewable energy potential there is in just those 15 middle states: https://acore.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Corporate-Demand-and-Transmission-January-2018.pdf

In this video, we explore how Rowan Energy is using blockchain technology and cryptocurrency to revolutionize the renewable energy industry. Rowan Energy's hybrid blockchain incentivizes the adoption of renewable energy and encourages sustainable living. Through their SmartMiner device and tokenomics model, solar owners are rewarded with Rowan Rewards, which can be cashed out or used to purchase carbon offset certificates built using blockchain and NFT standards. With more than one million homes in the UK having solar panels, Rowan Energy's low-carbon blockchain and SmartMiner device offer an opportunity to earn nearly three times as much for self-produced green energy. Borough President Eric Adams convened his Renewable and Sustainable Energy Taskforce (ReSET), a collaboration between Borough Hall, city and state agencies, higher education and green policy think tanks that is focused on advancing a sustainable future for Brooklyn.
"With renewable energy, what can we do to move the conversation forward? How can we take an older structure built in 1848, such as Borough Hall, and turn it into a place retrofitted with renewable sources to serve as a symbol of what the borough and city can do?" said Borough President Adams. "This is a great starting place to move forward from a place of isolation to a place of collaboration. We will focus on an overall theme: how can we make renewable and sustainable energy a part of our everyday life in Brooklyn."
The initial discussion gave an opportunity for Borough President Adams and his staff to exchange ideas in breaking down the barriers to using renewable energy in Brooklyn, including combating bureaucratic red tape and greater information sharing. Some preliminary ideas discussed included the greening of Brooklyn Borough Hall, offering residents energy literacy opportunities and developing incentives to engage community-based organizations with renewable energy programs.
